Noel Gallagher performs on Italian X Factor despite slamming show

He had previously hit out at the talent show for having ‘nothing to do with music’, but that didn’t stop Noel Gallagher taking to the stage on the Italian X Factor on Thursday in Milan to entertain the audience with his solo material.

The former Oasis frontman, 50, appeared to have a change of heart towards the singing competition and beamed as he put on an energetic performance for fans.

Equipped with his guitar, Noel took to the stage while casually clad in a bomber jacket and jeans and delighted audience-goers with his rocky vocals.

His performance came after the release of his solo album High Flying Birds and appearing in high spirits, Noel was seen flashing a smile as he headed out onto the stage and appeared to perform a number of tracks, switching guitars in between songs.

His appearance on The X Factor, however, may come as a surprise to some as the rocker had previously slammed the show for having ‘nothing to do with music’.

In an interview with Radio Times back in 2008, Noel had criticised the credibility of the show’s judges and its contestants.

He claimed: ‘If somebody is dangling this carrot of “fame and fortune” in front of a checkout girl who can sing like Britney Spears then they’re going to go for it, right?

‘You’re going in at the top, with a number one that sells 750,000 or whatever and you’ve got someone like Danni Minogue telling you you’re really talented – and if there’s one person in the room who wouldn’t know talent if it kicked them in the a*se it’s Danni Minogue.’

Danni had appeared as a judge on the show for three years between 2007 and 2010.

Noel claimed that he had been personally asked by music mogul Simon Cowell to join the judging panel of The X Factor, but had turned the offer down in a ‘long drawn out saga of phone calls’.

The Chief explained in an interview with Absolute Radio how he would not like to say lines on TV such as, ‘You know I can only take three into the final, and this is the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. I left Oasis, but that was nothing to compared to this.’

He had, however, praised Simon and his harsh critique as a judge and added: ‘This is going to sound crazy but if the music business was inhabited by more people like him it would be in a better place because he’s brutally honest. He’s not pretending to be anything he’s not.’

And earlier this year, he appeared to defend the X Factor judge over claims he has ‘ruined’ music.

Returning to Absolute Radio, Noel said: ‘Only in the sense that there’s a constant narrative about Simon Cowell has ruined the lives of everybody.

‘Nobody’s forced to buy this music, and because there’s nobody like The Verve or Oasis, or that kind of thing anymore, or Britpop or anything like that: that’s Simon Cowell’s fault.

‘It’s like the X Factor is a TV show it’s got nothing to do with music whatsoever. Anything that’s come from X Factor, that’s got nothing to do with music.’
