Liam Gallagher on Oasis, John Lennon and being a true Rock Star

It’s a good time to be Liam Gallagher.

The legendary Oasis frontman—arguably the greatest rock-and-roll singer in a generation—just released a new solo album (Why Me? Why Not), his second, and is about to head off on a lengthy international tour to support it with a handful of West Coast dates opening for the Who before heading back to the U.K. and Europe.

He’s the subject of a new documentary, As It Was, exploring his post-Oasis life—and Friday night sees the airing of his MTV Unplugged concert, filmed recently at the majestic and baroque Hull City Hall.

What better moment, then, to catch up with him for a morning walk-and-talk around London’s Hampstead Heath, where—clad, as ever, in a stylish (but, as it turned out, unsettlingly warm) parka—he tackled every question we could throw at him, from his go-to drink (spoiler alert: “All of ’em”) to his hangover cure, and from his spirit animal to who plays his, er, estranged brother Noel in the movie: “The little fella of Ant & Dec” (translation: Britain’s Got Talent and I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! presenter Declan Donnelly—some wild speculation here says this wasn’t intended as a compliment).

A brief nota bene for the 73 Questions connoisseur: This episode one was shot entirely in one attempt—no rehearsal, no advance peek at the questions, no walk-through, no sound check. Straight, no chaser, you might say. Having nailed it straight out of the gate, Liam and his parka walked off—legs akimbo, arms swinging side-to-side—into the midday sun.
