Liam Gallagher’s favourite parkas, coats and outerwear

Liam Gallagher’s favourite parkas, coats and outerwear

In celebration of Liam Gallagher’s 48th birthday, we’ve sourced ten of his most iconic outerwear looks. Invest in one of these pieces and you’ll be on the road to supernova style

In 2020 kids are still dressing like Liam Gallagher. The Oasis frontman solidified 1990s trends, but his practical garments (which traversed football stadiums, nights out and music festivals) have even more appeal today. Highly influenced by 1960s mods, parkas, pea coats and floral shirts made up his go-to uniform, but they didn’t look dated. Rather, they looked confident, because he mixed them with garments from the rising “Madchester” scene: mountain jackets, oversized T-shirts and many a bucket hat.

Safe to say Liam Gallagher quickly became a style icon and, in 2006, founded Pretty Green: a British menswear brand which unites people through a mutual love of music, culture and clothing. Today, Gallagher is celebrating his 48th birthday, so we’ve sourced ten of his most iconic outerwear moments. Invest in one of these pieces and you’ll be on the road to supernova style…

1. The pocketed parka

When: 23 June 1995

Why it works: Liam Gallagher and the khaki parka are one. Finished with two large front pockets for practicality, it’s a mainstay in his wardrobe, often worn with slim black jeans and always zipped and buttoned right to the top. What he wears underneath barely comes into question – and why should it when his outer silhouette looks this good?

2. The oversized zip-up jacket

When: 16 August 1994

Why it works: Sure, Gallagher is most often associated with parkas and mod gear, but he’s also sported his fair share of cropped, casual jackets – this zip-up being the greatest example. Clad in navy (you’ll only ever see him in an earthy colour palette), the boxy silhouette looks brilliant, and we’re really into his top styling tactic: lifting the collar for a touch of nonchalance. Extra outfit points for those incredible square sunglasses too.

3. The poncho parka

When: 4 June 2017

Why it works: It’s rare to see Gallagher wearing a bright pop of colour, but when he does he pulls it off with force. Shown here at the One Love Manchester Benefit Concert in 2017, he opted for a fierce orange shade for his poncho design and, as a result, served one of his most iconic parka moments to date.

4. The duffel parka

When: 27 November 2010

Why it works: When it comes to Liam Gallagher’s parkas, they started off waterproof and zip-up in his younger years, and though he still wears those, the details in more recent years are a little more style-savvy. Case in point: this party arrival back in 2010, when he traded his zip for a bold duffle fastening. Styled with a turtleneck and trilby hat, it’s a major yes from us.

5. The leather bomber jacket

When: 31 October 1996

Why it works: Gallagher wouldn’t be a true rock star without a leather jacket to hand. However, his is a toned option, with a bomber design. Pictured here at a Canadian concert back in 1996, he left his jacket open to expose his untucked checked shirt beneath – a subtle way of showing off his smart style. Good choice.

6. The suede biker jacket

When: 7 January 2013

Why it works: After founding Pretty Green in 2006, designs from Gallagher’s own label were bound to slip into his wardrobe and this one has got to be our favourite. Taking the subtle appearance of a biker jacket, it was crafted in suede, fronted with four square pockets and finished with shoulder epaulettes. Soft, slim-fitting and just plain cool – what’s not to love?

7. The single-breasted trench

When: 4 November 1995

Why it works: The trench coat is a slightly more traditional side to Gallagher’s wardrobe – still keeping it relaxed by opting for a single-breasted style and leaving it unbuttoned for extra cool points. The details of the trench – collar, cuffs and waist belt – work alongside his floral shirt for a smarter take on 1960s style.

8. The denim jacket

When: 1 February 1996

Why it works: Liam Gallagher? In a denim jacket? Yes! It happened! In 1996, to be exact. He made the look a complete Gallagher triumph by styling it with a baggy crewneck T-shirt and sporty bucket hat. Oh, and not to forget the collar, which was turned up as per, of course.

9. The cream car coat

When: 11 June 2013

Why it works: If you’re searching for a way to elevate your casual style, Gallagher has got a tip for you: invest in a cream car coat. Simple, structured and incredibly stylish, this lighter piece of outerwear is elegant without looking like you’re trying too hard. When styled with a long, printed scarf (ideally rested over the coat), you’re in for an easy outfit win.

10. The mountain jacket

When: 22 March 1996

Why it works: The mountain jacket got a serious upgrade when worn by Gallagher. It was “Madchester” to a tee, alongside his baggy 1990s jeans, a tambourine and layered locks of hair. A practical layer that will keep you warm as well as a nod to the stylish man, we suggest investing in one. Stat. Autumn is round the corner, after all.
