Noel Gallagher explains why he looked such a state in the ‘Whatever’ music video

Noel Gallagher has explained why he looks so messy in the music video for Oasis’s 1994 hit single ‘Whatever’.

While Noel has never had a Christmas Number 1, he came close that year, with only enduring Christmas classics ‘Stay Another Day’ by East 17 and ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey pushing it down to number three.

‘Whatever’ was a success despite Noel’s messy state in the video, the reason for which he explained to Alan Carr for the Alan Carr Christmas Chatty Man special.

“I was very drunk that day,” Noel said.

“I had been out all night. What I’m wearing, you don’t usually wear that kind of stuff on a video shoot.

“I’d been out the night before to the pub. I woke up in a bus shelter in Maida Vale.”

He continued: “It was before the days of mobile phones and I didn’t know where the video shoot was and I didn’t have any way of getting in touch with anybody.

“Someone from the record label just happened to be passing in a car when I was trying to hail a taxi even though I didn’t know where I was going, but it made for a good video.”

Asked if he was a fan of Christmas, Noel said: “I loathe it. I’m named after Christmas by two Irish people.
“The adverts get on my nerves, like the one with Martin Freeman in at the minute…just nonsense.
“What has that got to do with Christmas? What has it to do with Jesus? No one ever mentions Jesus.”

He added: “I’m not in to the adverts, apart from the ones where they pay me a shitload of money to have my tunes in. They’re all right.”

Alan Carr Christmas Chatty Man airs on Christmas Day at 10pm Channel 4.
