Imelda May on Working with Noel Gallagher, Bono, and More: “I Know I Have Something to Bring to the Table”

Singer-songwriter Imelda May feels ‘blown away’ by the talent of some of the huge names she has worked with. However, she knows she has something valuable to contribute.

The Irish musician spoke to Kate Thornton, host of White Wine Question Time, about her childhood, work ethic, and making positive changes in life.

Her latest album 11 Past The Hour features duets with Ronnie Wood and Noel Gallagher. In the past, she has also performed with Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Bono, and more.

May shared: โ€œSomebody once asked me, โ€˜Do you get blown away working with certain people?โ€™ Of course, I admire their talent. But it feels right. I have something to bring to the table.”

“It feels aligned. It feels good. If things fell into my lap, I wouldnโ€™t be sure about it.”

“I know what I’m doing to an extent. Nobody knows what they’re doing in life. We muddle through!”

“I love to work, to write, and to make music. Of course, there are parts of the job I donโ€™t like, but you must do them.”

May credited her hard work for her career success, including her third album Mayhem, which went six times platinum.

She said, โ€œWork hard, take chances. You need to take risks to own your success or failure.โ€

โ€œYou must admit your failings and own your victories. But when things fall into your lap, it feels undeserved.โ€

Kate Thornton noted the challenges of fame and the world that artists are suddenly thrown into.

May added: โ€œI worry about people in those shows. Theyโ€™re entertaining, but they may expect instant success.”

โ€œIf you’re seeking lifelong fame, that wonโ€™t happen. Itโ€™s all about continuous work. You have to love it and keep doing it.”

The pair also discussed Mayโ€™s early tours with Jools Holland. She booked smaller venues alongside these tours to reach more people.

May said, โ€œI really wanted to do it. I just wanted to play my music and have people come.โ€

โ€œIf I sold out, it looked great. People who missed tickets would rush to buy them next time.”

Jools Holland was kind enough to let me put fliers on the seats and invite them back, which worked.”
