Noel Gallagher has shared his thoughts on Guns N’ Roses headlining Glastonbury this weekend. The former Oasis star called the choice “crazy shit”.
Noel Gallagher has openly criticized the choice of Guns N’ Roses as Glastonbury headliners. According to him, it is simply “crazy shit”.
The US rock band is scheduled to perform on the Pyramid Stage this Saturday, June 24. They will be positioned between Arctic Monkeys on Friday and Elton John on Sunday.
However, Gallagher does not agree with this decision. In his opinion, a British act would have been a much better fit.
“I thought, ‘What? Are you being serious? That’s crazy shit’,” Gallagher told the Daily Star’s ‘Wired’ column.
Furthermore, he added, “When you think of all the huge British artists who’ve had albums out this past year, having Guns N’ Roses headlining the Saturday is mad.”
For those wondering why Gallagher will not be at Glastonbury this year, there is a clear reason. He recently released ‘Council Skies’ with his High Flying Birds and his packed schedule leaves no room for it.
In his own words, “I would have been smart to play Glastonbury this year. But I played it last year, as my 2020 booking was pushed back.”
Nevertheless, he remains optimistic. “There’s always next year to go back to Glastonbury. I’m not going anywhere.”
Since the end of lockdown, Gallagher has found touring once again to be a joyful experience. Consequently, this year he has chosen to focus on smaller festivals.
In fact, he will be performing at PennFest in Buckinghamshire, Splendour Festival in Nottingham, and West Yorkshire’s Bingley Weekender.
As he explained, “What I like about boutique festivals is that pretty much everyone will go to see you.”
Moreover, he pointed out, “That makes the festival more like one of our own gigs. You won’t get new fans out of it, but you’ll have a great night.”
Interestingly, Gallagher also shared that the new songs from ‘Council Skies’ have not been warmly received by US audiences.
In addition to that, he recently sparked more controversy. Speaking to NME’s In Conversation series, he called The 1975 “shit” and “not rock”.
To elaborate, Gallagher said: “I was watching The 1975 at the BRITs with my kids, two teenage lads. I thought, ‘Is it me being a grumpy old man, or is this shit?’ They were both going, ‘Oh no, this is fucking shit’.
He continued, “The 1975, Best Rock Band? Someone needs to re-define that immediately. I don’t know what that is, but it’s certainly not fucking rock. Whatever rock is, that’s not it.”
Meanwhile, Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis remains positive about Arctic Monkeys performing. Despite the cancellation of a recent show due to Alex Turner’s acute laryngitis, she assured fans that “a couple of back-up plans” are ready.
