Noel Gallagher recently shared his thoughts on The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Nirvana during an interview on talkSPORT.
The former Oasis co-frontman was on the show mainly to discuss football. Naturally, the conversation shifted to one of his biggest passions: music.
Noel Gallagher’s Take on The Beatles’ Now and Then
The hosts played The Beatles’ latest chart-topping single ‘Now and Then’. The track features vocals from the late John Lennon and marks the final song to include all four Beatles.
Discussing the technology behind the song, Noel Gallagher said:
“The original demo had a middle section with really weird, flowery chords. They’ve cut that out.”
“It’s The Beatles. I’m heavily biased towards them.”
He continued: “They haven’t invented anything. They’ve separated it. When Lennon recorded the demo, it picked up both piano and vocals. Now with computers, they can separate them.”
Noel Gallagher on Taylor Swift and Nirvana
When Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ played next, Noel Gallagher quickly dismissed it.
“That’s not for me,” he said. “I don’t get it.”
However, he was much more positive about Nirvana’s iconic hit ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
“That album still sounds amazing today,” he remarked. “It’s a modern classic.”
Noel Gallagher Calls Wonderwall “Annoying”
The conversation then turned to Oasis’ own hit ‘Wonderwall’.
Released as the fourth single from (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, the track topped charts in Australia and New Zealand. It also reached number two in the UK and Ireland.
Although now one of the biggest Britpop anthems of the 90s, Noel Gallagher wasn’t convinced it would be a hit.
“When I first wrote Wonderwall, I actually thought it was a bit annoying,” he admitted.
He continued: “Our record label heard it. When it finished, everyone from Sony and Creation Records just said, ‘That’s it. That’s going to be the hit.’”
