Noel Gallagher: ‘Me and Liam would’ve got nowhere without each other’

Noel Gallagher has said he knows his new music can never compare to Oasis – and admitted he and his brother Liam “wouldn’t have gotten anywhere” without each other, despite their tempestuous relationship.

Showing perhaps a slightly softer side than usual when talking about his brother, Noel said: “I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without him, he wouldn’t have got anywhere without me.”

Noel was speaking on the red carpet at the BMI London Awards, where he was honoured with the President’s Award for his prolific songwriting career.

Asked about Liam’s wedding, which will be his third, he joked, “Yes, of course,” before saying: “No, I didn’t get an invite.

“Well, as he didn’t invite me to the previous four weddings I’m not going to go to this one, am I?”

Noel, who attended the awards ceremony with his wife Sara MacDonald and daughter Anais, spoke about being recognised for his songwriting, saying how much he still enjoys it.

“I love what I do, I love being me, I’ve gone through different eras of songwriting.”

“I’m at a period now where I’m writing songs I think, ‘a lot of people are going to hate this’.”

“I haven’t got any hobbies. I can’t drive, I gave up smoking, I don’t do drugs, I can’t swim. I don’t really like going on holiday, I like football. That’s about it. What else am I going to do?”

Despite Oasis fans being desperate for a reunion, Noel said that although he is proud of his past work, he doesn’t think about his time in the band anymore.

Trying to repeat the impact of “the best band of our era by a mile” would be pointless, he said, having “nailed it” the first time.

“There’s no point going round the houses forever trying to rewrite Champagne Supernova,” he said.

“I know we live in an age of nostalgia and everyone wants us to get back together and all that, but I genuinely don’t think about it.

“I play as much [Oasis] as I can be arsed playing, but it’s not something I think about at all.”

Noel joked that he and Liam are now doing their own separate things – “well, he’s doing my thing, and I’m doing my thing too”.

But he also said he is “cool” with the fact he will always be remembered for Oasis.

“I’m not bothered about my solo career being compared to that, nothing is going to compare to that. We were the best band of our era by a f****** mile.

“You only read about half of what we got up to.”

But he admitted that some of his Oasis songs do make him cringe “because I know I just made a lot of them up on the spot”.

“Most of (third album) Be Here Now was sh*t… there’s a lot of nonsense. But, you know, I was songwriting in an era where every single that came out had to have three B-sides…

“Recently it’s got a lot better.”

Speaking about his current music, Noel said he was hoping to start recording a new album in the spring.

However, he added: “If I record an album I’ll have to go back out on tour.

“Since 2015 I’ve done four back-to-back world tours and I’m just about at the end of my tether with it.

“I did [enjoy the last one] but there’s always a point you come to where you kind of overstretch yourself.”
